Bird Fact Friday!
Today we’re going to take a look at the Secretary Bird!
(Note: We do not have a Secretary Bird at the Raptors)

🌍Native to Africa, Secretary Birds are found south of the Sahara Desert. These birds prefer savannas with scattered acacia trees and shorter grasses where they can easily hunt and see while walking.

🐍The Secretary bird is known for its ability to catch and kill all types of snakes- even venomous ones! They catch their prey by kicking and stomping them.

🦵The Secretary bird has legs for days- having the longest legs of any bird of prey!

👀Can they fly? YES! Secretary birds are good flyers and if disturbed will run and glide on open wings. They soar like eagles or vultures and can reach altitudes of 3,650 metres.

😂These birds are natural administrative assistants - okay that last fact isn’t true!

The Ferruginous Hawk has rufous-coloured feathers and pale-beige to white under belly. The name "Ferruginous" is derived from the Latin word for rust which compliments the copper-like colour of these hawks feathers. Another identification tip is the pronounced brown-feathered “V” along the underparts of its legs and tail.

Our staff has so many amazing stories to share!
Brooke is one of our Educational Ambassadors, aka bird handlers here at the centre and she also works as a wildlife management officer. Over the past five years of working at The Raptors, one of Brooke’s fondest memories is of her first time working with Inspector, a Spectacled Owl.
When Brooke brought Inspector to meet some visitors on their glove, Inspector felt so at peace that he ended up falling asleep on the guest! Brooke says: “it was an incredibly sweet moment. I think he just felt so comfortable it was a really warm and sunny day, so he just decided to take a little power nap! Definitely memorable for both myself and the visitor!”

Next time you’re visiting, make sure to say hi to both Brooke and Inspector!

🧠Did you know that the Common Raven is among the smartest of all birds and has gained a reputation for solving complicated problems?!

🤸‍♂️The Common Raven is an acrobatic flier- they can often be seen doing rolls and somersaults in the air!

🙌The younger birds are fond of playing games with sticks, repeatedly dropping them and diving to catch the stick in midair. Our very own Kyle loves to play with sticks!

🎙Common Ravens can mimic the calls of other bird species.

This is Goblin, a Black Vulture, giving his feathers a good preening out in the sunshine. Goblin would not be able to fly without his feathers, so it’s important for him to keep his in perfect condition. Preening allows birds to remove debris, help with waterproofing, or during a moult they will preen to remove sheaths from their new feathers.
